Officers in charge of combating invasive alien species – Down with IAS!

What are the invasive alien species in this environment ?

Invasive alien species 🧐

Some animals or plants, originally from other regions and introduced intentionally or unintentionally by humans, can pose a real threat to our biodiversity. They do so through predation (they are predators), disease transmission, hybridization with local species (reproduction), alteration of natural habitats, or disruption of ecosystem services. They can also have negative impacts on economic activities and human health.

You are scientists specialized in combating invasive alien species (IAS) in the Caribbean. These species are almost always the same from one island to another. Therefore, you understand how the biodiversity of our islands functions and the significant negative impact that the proliferation of these species can have. You implement actions to control IAS: capturing invasive fauna and/or removing and replanting endemic flora.

Your knowledge of the environment:

Invasive alien species present in the area

This environment consists of small islets threatened on land by black rats and mongooses, which prey on the eggs of ground-nesting birds as well as on endemic anoles.

The invasive iguana (green iguana) proliferates on the islets at the expense of the Lesser Antillean iguana (Iguana delicatissima).

Underwater, the lionfish spreads; this voracious fish, originally from Polynesia, can consume up to ten small fish per minute, easily disrupting the balance of Caribbean coral reef ecosystems.
