Mountain oleander

Description :

One of the rare gymnosperms, the Mountain Oleander or “Bois Rose” is recognizable by its naked ovules visible on the scales on the tree’s branches. Endemic to the Antilles, it is more common in Guadeloupe than in the other Caribbean islands where it is recorded.

It is a medium-sized tree with a trunk with thin, cracked, blackish bark. It has alternate, stiff, dark green leaves on the upper side, similar to those of the oleander.

Its inconspicuous flowers generally appear between December and January. It also produces red drupe fruits.

Habitat :

The mountain oleander is one of the medium-sized trees of the humid forest (rainforest) in the west-indies.

Threat factor :

Its environment being relatively protected, the mountain oleander is not an endangered species.
