Description :
The Trogon damoiseau (Red-bellied Trogon) often perches upright with its tail pointing downward. It is relatively tame and inactive. This small, colorful bird has bright green plumage, a red belly, a yellow beak, a gray throat and chest, a long dark blue tail with white markings, and golden eyes. Its call is a high-pitched sound similar to that of a pigeon.
Distribution :
In Haiti, it is observed in the Massif de la Hotte, La Selle, and in La Visite National Park.
Habitat :
It inhabits humid, dry, and pine forests, at elevations ranging from 500 to 3,000 meters.
Threats :
Several bird species in Haiti are threatened, including the Red-bellied Trogon (kalson wouj), the national emblem. The main factors affecting bird populations are habitat loss, introduction of invasive or inappropriate species, and uncontrolled urban expansion.
