BABIN BEACH

BABIN BEACH

Description

Located in Vieux-Bourg, Morne-à-l’eau, the picturesque Babin Beach overlooks an extremely calm body of water. The mangroves whose roots bathe in the sea turn the water brackish. Underfoot, a greyish mud attracts more and more bathers. Virtues are attributed to it against rheumatism, osteoarthritis, but especially against skin diseases. According to the elders, it is an ancient tradition that dates back to the time of slavery. And if ten years ago only the elderly came to massage their joints or soothe a sore knee, today entire families take advantage of the benefits of clay. They stay at bath time or for an entire afternoon, in the heart of this natural area protected by limestone contours.

The busiest site in Guadeloupe, with 500,000 visitors a year, welcomes sunrise lovers and hikers. At the top of the cross, you can enjoy a 360° view of the Pointe des Châteaux peninsula, but also of La Désirade, Marie Galante and Petite Terre. On a clear day, you can even see Basse Terre and the Saintes archipelago.

Ecotourism potential

In the process of becoming the ecotourism capital* of Grande-Terre, the city of Morne-à-l’eau, in collaboration with the Conservatoire du littoral, undertook works to rehabilitate and reinforce the reception facilities. Its opening to the Grand-Cul-de-Sac-Marin, its mangroves, its nature reserve as well as its soft tranquility, help to disconnect, and make you feel calm and fulfilled, far from the hustle and bustle.
