The Pointe du Vieux-Fort, or point of the Old Fort, is located at the southern tip of Basse-Terre, right on the edge of the Windward and Leeward coasts. The east coast stretches to Petit-cul-de-Sac Marin to the north, while the west coast stretches to Pointe Allègre to the north. It is a region with rugged terrain, so it has long been difficult to access.
Leaning on the beautiful Mount Caraibes, is Vieux-fort, the smallest town in Guadeloupe. It is a fishing village recognized by sailors thanks to its famous lighthouse that marks the entrance to the Basse-Terre bay. It played an important role in the defense of the port of Basse-Terre, which led to the construction of two batteries at the end of the 17th century, whose ruins and cannons can be admired near the Lighthouse. A pleasant path leads to Fort L’Olive, to which the town owes its name. Built in 1955, the wonderful lighthouse warns sailors of the dangers of the coast.
In addition to its captivating history, it is a great venue for sunset lovers, especially at the Lighthouse restaurant, and the exceptional seabed is a delight for divers.
As for diving, it is a very accessible site even for snorkeling, which allows you to explore and admire the beauty of the seabed. Giant fan coral (Annella mollis)
A coastal path leads from Pointe Mazarin, with its picnic area, to the Vieux-Fort church, one of the oldest in Guadeloupe with a unique bell tower. This allows you to discover Anse Dupuy and its fishing port, the Fort and the completely white lighthouse, from which young people have fun diving. On one side, it is possible to admire the islands of Les Saintes and, on the other, the pointed peaks of the Montes Caraibes.
